7 Key Points of Responsible Dog Ownership

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! Of course, we think every month is Responsible Dog Ownership Month, but that’s another topic. We all know that belly rubs, ear scritches, treats, and car rides will get Fido’s tail wagging. However, good doggy care goes far beyond that. Here, a Somerville, MA vet discusses responsible dog ownership.

Training

While you don’t absolutely have to teach Fido cute tricks like Shake or Roll Over, it is very important for him to know and obey basic commands. Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down are the most important ones.

Safety

Never underestimate Fido’s ability to get himself into trouble! Do some basic doggyproofing, and remove anything that could be dangerous, such as toxic plants; plastic bags; small and/or sharp items; and, well, pretty much anything your dog shouldn’t be eating. If you have a yard, it’s also important to make sure that your fences are secure, so your canine buddy can’t escape.

Toys/Stimulation

Dogs are intelligent, curious, and playful. Fido will quickly get bored with nothing to do, which can lead him into all sorts of mischief. Offer your pup lots of fun toys, and take time to play with him every day.

Veterinary Care

Making sure your canine pal goes to the vet is very important! Most dogs will need to come in at least once a year, but if your pet is a puppy or senior, or has health issues, your vet may recommend more frequent appointments. At home, watch for signs of illness, and contact your vet right away if you notice anything amiss.

Exercise

Our canine companions all need proper activity to stay healthy. Exercise will keep Fido in good physical shape. It also allows him to burn off excess energy, which is very helpful in curbing bad doggy behavior. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Proper Diet

While Fido would probably love to eat bacon cheeseburgers every day, that wouldn’t be any better for him than it is for us. Offer your furry pal a high-quality food, and be careful not to go overboard with fatty treats.

Tail Wags

Love is the secret ingredient in any pet care routine. Spend time with Fido every day. Remember, time spent with dogs is never wasted!
