7 Reasons To Adopt A Guinea Pig

Did you know that March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month? These little guys make wonderful pets! Here, a Somerville, MA vet offers lists some great reasons to bring a Guinea pig—also known as a cavy—into your home.

They’re Adorable!

First and foremost, cavies are absolutely delightful. They are basically little balls of fur that love to play and snuggle. Your pet will definitely keep a smile on your face!

They Make Cute Noises

We all know that dogs bark and cats meow, but do you know what Guinea pigs do? They actually make a variety of adorable sounds, from wheeks to barks and chirps. Your cavy will vocalize differently depending on whether he’s happy, playful, curious, or scared.

They’re Very Gentle

Guinea pigs are often chosen as children’s pets, and with good reason. They are typically very docile and friendly, and rarely scratch or bite.

They Are Easy Keepers

One reason Guinea pigs are such popular pets is the fact that they are so easy to care for. You’ll need to provide your pet with a clean, comfy cage; fresh water; and, of course, proper veterinary care. As for food, your pint-sized pal will need a diet that is based on grass hay and commercial food. Cavies need lots of Vitamin C, so you’ll also need to offer suitable fruits and veggies, and possibly a supplement. Chew toys are also a must. Ask your vet for specific care instructions.

They Can Learn Tricks

Cavies are actually quite smart, and can even learn simple tricks. For example, you may be able to teach your tiny furball to turn in circles, jump through a hoop, or go into their cage when you call.

They Love To Cuddle

Guinea pigs may be small, but they can form very close bonds with their owners. In fact, many of them actually enjoy sleeping on their humans’ laps! Your cavy may even purr with happiness when you pet or snuggle him, almost like a cat.

Guinea Pigs Need Love Too

We believe that all animals, from tiny mice to huge elephants, should be treated with love, respect, and compassion. Helping our animal companions is a wonderful act of kindness, and one that is great for the soul!
